february 2006
february 24 2006 22:26 pst went running today for the first time since i pulled my hamstring last summer. 2 miles seems pretty easy. if i can do that every day for a week, maybe i'll start going longer distances.
february 24 2006 8:06 pst this week started off with frost in the mornings again. today it's in the 50s, warmish for february- but on friday last week, there was snow on on the mountains and in the low berkeley hills, which peak at only about 1700 feet above sea level.
it's the end of february, and i've only been up to tahoe six or seven days this year. there wasn't much snow in january, so i guess i wasn't missing much then, but somehow i thought it would be more. my general goal is to get 20 days or so, and it doesn't seem like i'm going to get anywhere near that. if the spring stays cold, i could get a couple of weekends in march still, but that's just not going to make up for missing all of december.
maybe it's time to find another recreational activity for the winter that doesn't reqire 6 hours of car time to make it happen.
february 8 2006 20:21 pst we've been going to bed earlier and waking up earlier for the last week or so. it's skewing my sense of what goes on in the world towards east coast time, which i guess is the whole point. or maybe the point is just to get to work here before everyone else does.
this strategy dovetails nicely with getting up early to go snowboarding, so i don't mind so much. makes the weekends less of a struggle. speaking of snowboarding, it was 55 degrees and sunny in truckee yesterday. winter is over, at least in california. we'll be lucky to get one or two more big storms this year- i may have to go somewhere else to get real snow.
i'm all on pins and needles- chance to meet folks from lewis & clark tonight. send good vibes my way if you have a chance.
february 6 2006 21:14 pst curling up on the couch definitely did not happen. tonight on the way home from work, the sun was setting just as our train came out of the tunnel at west oakland, and i was treated to the spectacle of reflections from the windows of all the houses in the oakland hills. isolated windows looked like little spots of fire tucked away in the green hillside. when a neighborhood had all of the houses squared away on the same angle, all of their windows would light up at once, like the whole street was ablaze. we were too far away to make out individual houses, but the constellation of their windows gave them away by reflecting the setting sun back into the eyes of all us weary commuters making our way home.
february 2 2006 08:10 pst nasty weather for a couple of days in a row now- i guess that's february for you. this weekend is going to be full of excitement... peggy's friend kim is coming out to run a half-marathon on saturday, and i have a water polo tourney on saturday afternoon, and then sunday we have colliding superbowl plans. in the middle of all this i have a strong desire to curl up on the couch with a good book and just stay home all day.
your happy food link of the day: pork jerkey, coming soon to a retail outlet near you. but if you just can't wait, write a short endorsement of your favorite kind, and maybe they'll send you a couple of bags for free!
february 1 2006 08:55 pst i sure was worried about all those mad scientists, using their evil genius to create human / animal crossbreeds. thank goodness we have george w. bush to protect us from the island of dr. moreau. i mean, even hollywood couldn't make that idea scary. what civil rights do you think we'll have to give up so that we can be protected from the wolf-man?
