november 2006
november 28 2006 20:30 pst pandora internet radio is making my day. if you haven't already, click on over there and discover some new music.
november 27 2006 23:10 pst it's snowing outside right now. and sticking. There is already about an inch on the ground. i am not amused.
november 26 2006 14:15 pst home again, home again, jiggity jig. the drive took about 3 hours, including two stops for snacks.
november 25 2006 17:47 pst wanted to make a note of this on thursday morning, but was too distracted then: just rolled over 45,000 miles on the s4.
november 24 2006 17:43 pst today was my first day on the snow. legs are a little rusty, but the snow was great- 18 inches in the last two days, and we got some fresh tracks on the last ride down the hill anyway.
november 19 2006 14:18 pst yesterday it stopped raining for a bit, so we went for a run. today, the rain started again, and according to weatherunderground it's going to rain nonstop all week. i guess i should be happy that all i have to do this week is read cases and write outlines, but it's still discouraging to think that we haven't seen the sun since tuesday, and it's going to be a while before it comes out again.
i realized last night how much i miss the bay area. not for the first time, and certainly not for the last.
november 14 2006 11:59 pst i'd like to take a moment to capture a thought. sometimes the first step towards mastering an irrational general annoyance is understanding the root cause that provokes the emotional response. i realized last night that assignments in one of my classes proceed from a flawed assumption about my goals and motivations. i think the annoyance is more severe because the prof went to the trouble of actually asking everyone about their motivation for enrolling... and all indications are that she just ignored my answer.
if she didn't pretend to care why we were here in the first place, perhaps it wouldn't irk me quite so much. i'm irritated because i had expectations that i thought were reasonable, and this teacher and this class just aren't living up to them.
november 13 2006 11:57 pst still raining. it rained most of saturday, except for two hours or so in the afternoon when p and i went for a run. it rained all day sunday. i drove up to portland with one of my classmates on friday, it rained all the way there and all the way back. i guess snow is finally starting to fall in the mountains...
november 7 2006 2:15 pst rain: wet. gutters: working. worms: all over. me: g'night.
november 6 2006 20:00 pst good luck, dad.
oh and i meant to write something about this yesterday: last week, 25 degrees f, sunny, crystal clear. today: 72 and overcast, lots of rain on the way.
november 5 2006 15:25 pst the joys of home ownership: i spent a little more than two hours today cleaning muck out of the rain gutters on the front of our new house. it smelled exactly the way the mud flats at the nature center used to smell. the way my pond clothes smelled after a day of chasing snapping turtles around for the little kids. like sediment and vegetable matter that has been decaying underwater for years and years.
i should have taken pictures. there was a lot of moss growing out from the edge of the roof. in some places, it was three or four inches thick, and probably six inches wide. no wonder the gutters were overflowing last night.
i think it's fixed now. and since the weather forecast is for rain rain rain every day for the next week, i'm sure we'll have opportunity to find out for sure before too long.
poking around on the web afterwards, i discovered that there is a whole gutter supply and accessory industry. who knew? instead of downspouts, i want to install rain chains.
november 4 2006 11:49 pst and just like that, it's november. finals are only 4 weeks away. i've learned so much in the last 11 weeks. now is the time to start putting it all together.
i'm putting together a to-do list for christmas already- things to get me ready for the start of next term. most of it is simply organizational- scheduling software ranks high on the list of problems i need to solve between now and then. it would also be really nice to confirm that i finally have networking set up properly on my laptop, so that i don't have to fiddle with it at all next term.
i plan to spend a little time this week evaluating different outliner software. wikipedia has a very helpful list. all the folks who bought peecees from UO have (for the most part) also purchased microsoft onenote, which i haven't used at all. if anyone out there has experience with one of the programs on the list, preferably one that is open-source, please let me know.
