january 2007

january 28 2007 11:26 pst we're both very sick. I've been coughing for days, feeling woozy too. p has been having trouble sleeping, and she has the same death-rattle cough. we both went to the doctor in the last 24 hours, and they prescribed amoxicillin and rest. we were finally going to have a housewarming party tonight for p's work friends, but we figured it would be pretty lousy to invite people to our house so that we could infect them with a chest cold.

so i'm spending the rest of the day in bed. best of luck to all of you who are strong enough to face the world today. we'll be back in action soon.

january 16 2007 23:26 pst it snowed hard last week for about 4 hours, and it stuck around until yesterday. yesterday, it started getting warmer... and the sun came out for a couple of hours... and it started to look like spring was coming. the weather forecast last night was that today was supposed to be 45 and warm rain.

so of course, when i woke up this morning and it was snowing hard again, i wasn't surprised. i dropped her off at work this morning in time for her 8:00 meeting, and it wasn't so bad. there wasn't really any snow on the roads to speak of- nothing like tahoe, certainly nothing like michigan. i came home, had some coffee, ate a frozen waffle or two, took a shower, and headed back out to class at about 9 am. and in the 40 minutes that had passed since i parked in the garage, two inches of snow had fallen on the roads and it had started to rain. the roads were still cold enough that the rain falling on the slush was turning to ice. i saw a city bus go sideways in the middle of 5th street. when we came home tonight, there was still snow in the driveway, and there was lots of slush on the roads. the yard is all full of snow again too.

but i got to school with no mishaps, and by the time i was in eugene proper, the rain had warmed enough that there was no snow left on the roads and traffic was moving normally. too bad these folks in portland weren't so lucky.

january 10 2007 21:49 pst snowing again tonight. it's cold enough to stick. the yard is filling up with white stuff, so the only question is whether there will be snow on the roads in the morning.

january 4 2007 12:38 pst oh, and the cat is fine, one of my hard drives is dying, and i still need to do floor moldings for the hallway and fix my leaky bathroom sink. i like to think i'm making progress, but sometimes I'm not so sure...

january 4 2007 12:26 pst in eugene today, it's trying to snow. the stuff coming out of the sky is just a little too big and falls just a little too slow for it to properly be called rain. but it's not snow either- no drifting flakes here. more like slush. somewhere in between. not very conducive to kite-flying

of course the travel home did not go as planned on the 2nd. i still don't have the heart or the patience to write much about it. the end result was that we got business-class seats from o'hare to denver, and an exit row in coach from denver to eugene, and lots of headache and hassle from every united agent we spoke with on the ground in all three cities. in their defense, the folks who were actually on the plane were very nice and quite professional- of course, that might be just becuase we were in business class. if we were stuck in the back with the rest of the cattle i imagine they would have gone right on ignoring us.

added to my list of things to do: write an angry/indignant letter to united, asking them why they don't have functional people working at AZO.

january 2 2007 10:13 est now it's all sorted. we're still in michigan today, but we'll fly home this afternoon, on united. turns out that not only did they feed us a line about the weather yesterday, but they booked us on an impossible flight. i'm going to put it down to silliness on the part of whoever they found to work on january 1, and just forget about it.

january 1 2007 13:02 est united screwed us today, so instead of halfway to chicago, right now i'm back in mom's house, waiting for a 6 am flight tomorrow. i'm extremely annoyed. they told us that our flight wouldn't take off on time for us to make our connection, and since there were no other flights today, they bumped us to a 7 am flight tomorrow on delta. their excuse for delaying the flight? high winds.

so we get back to the house, and i check the weather at o'hare airport, and they have 7mph winds. thanks, united. you lying weasels. oh, and that plane that was supposed to be delayed until 5:30? it took off 20 minutes late... about 40 minutes ago. I'm already inclined not to trust airlines and to think that they're just trying to cheat me any way they can. this experience doesn't do anything to help.

kalamazoo airport is right off my list. never again.

january 1 2007 13:02 est happy new year.
